VAQ-130 Zappers EKA-3B Skywarrior
In September 1968, Carrier AEW Squadron 13 Detachment 43 reported aboard CORAL SEA flying the (ECM) version of the Douglas A-3 type aircraft (EKA-3B). About a month later on October 1, 1968, Tactical Warfare Squadron 130 VAQ-130 was born out of the men and women from VAW-13. VAQ-130 took on a secondary mission of tanking and was a true compliment to the mission of the 4th Vietnam Combat Cruise aboard the USS Coral Sea (CVA-43) with CVW-15.
While at NAS Alameda, CA since July 1961, the squadron was designated VAW-13. They received their first EKA-3Bs and KA-3Bs in spring of 1967. The AEW squadron was re-designated Tactical Warfare Squadron 130 VAQ-130 on October 1, 1968.
VAQ-130 transferred to NAS Whidbey Island, WA in March 1975. After their first EKA-3Bs and KA-3Bs, VAQ-130 operated EA-6B Prowler then EA-18G Growler aircraft from NAS Whidbey Island, WA, where they remain garrisoned to this day. The Zappers of VAQ-130 still say "WE CAN HACK IT."
